Ліси мають важливе соціально-економічне та екологічне значення, є джерелом цінних ресурсів, забезпечують перебування у зв’язаному стані значної частини світового запасу вуглецю, сприяють збереженню біорізноманіття екосистем, а також виконують ряд інших екосистемних функцій. З початку повномасштабної російської військової агресії зафіксовано понад 3 тис. пожеж на площі більш ніж 2,5 млн га.
У період з 24 лютого 2022 року російські війська окупували Чорнобильську АЕС та всю територію Зони відчуження (ЗВ).

Захоплено і розграбовано адміністративні будівлі і споруди підприємств, установ і організацій, які підтримували безпеку території та забезпечували утримання радіонуклідів на місцевості. Крім того, окупаційними військами взято під контроль Чорнобильську АЕС та сховища відпрацьованого ядерного палива і ядерних відходів. Ці дії несуть в собі значну загрозу радіаційної катастрофи – такі наслідки можуть бути від ймовірних аварій на об’єктах зони промислового використання, від підпалів лісів та перелогів, які накопичили значну кількість радіонуклідів у період після аварії на Чорнобильській АЕС. Пожежі в природних екосистемах завдають значної шкоди лісам, лукам, можуть знищують цінні оселища, під загрозою знищення опинились рідкісні види флори та фауни. Через підвищену пожежну небезпеку та збільшенням ризиків для лісових екосистем Всеукраїнська екологічна ліга розпочала реалізовувати пілотний проєкт «Створення громадської системи протипожежного захисту лісів в Україні» в рамках Міжнародної програми Лісової служби США (U.S. Forest Service International Programs). On the implementation of the project "Creation of a public system of fire protection of forests in Ukraine"
Forests are of great socio-economic and ecological importance, they are a source of valuable resources, ensure that a significant part of the world's carbon stock is in a bound state, contribute to the conservation of ecosystem biodiversity, and perform a number of other ecosystem functions.
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian military aggression, more than 3 thousand fires have been recorded on an area of more than 2.5 million hectares.
Since February 24, 2022, Russian troops have occupied the Chornobyl NPP and the entire territory of the Exclusion Zone (Exclusion Zone). Administrative buildings and structures of enterprises, institutions and organizations that maintained the security of the territory and ensured the retention of radionuclides on the ground were seized and looted. In addition, the occupation troops took control of the Chornobyl NPP and spent nuclear fuel and nuclear waste storage facilities. These actions pose a significant threat of radiation catastrophe - such consequences may be caused by possible accidents at the facilities of the industrial use zone, from arson of forests and fallow lands that accumulated a significant amount of radionuclides after the Chornobyl accident. Fires in natural ecosystems cause significant damage to forests, meadows, can destroy valuable habitats, rare species of flora and fauna are under threat of extinction.
Due to the increased fire danger and increased risks to forest ecosystems, the All-Ukrainian Ecological League has launched a pilot project "Creation of a Public Forest Fire Protection System in Ukraine" within the framework of the U.S. Forest Service International Programs.
